Legal Papers for Orthodox weddings in Santorini
If you plan to have orthodox wedding in Santorini please not that one part (bride or groom) must be baptized as Orthodox.
LEGAL PAPERS for ORTHODOX WEDDINGS
- 1. PASSPORT COPY OF BRIDE AND GROOM.
- 2. FULL BIRTH CERTIFICATES OF BRIDE AND GROOM.
- 3. CERTIFICATE OF NO PREVIOUS MARRIAGE, OFFICIALLY CERTIFIED BY THE ARCHBISHOP OF THE AREA OF RESIDENCE.
- 4. CERTIFICATE OF NO IMPEDIMENT TO MARRIAGE FROM THE MUNICIPALITY, WHERE THE PERSON IS REGISTERED.
This document confirms that you have not been married and that you are free to married. This document can be issued in your local Registrar’s office and it mustn’t be issued more then three months before your wedding.
(click HERE to see an example of the document). - 5. IF ONE OF THE TWO PEOPLE, WHO INTEND TO GET MARRIED, IS OF ANOTHER DOGMA
(not Christian Orthodox, but still Christian) , a Public Notary’s act is required, where it is stated that the children will be baptized Christian Orthodox. - 6. DIVORCE CERTIFICATE IF ANY (from Civil and Church Authorities).
In the case that one or both sides has been divorced, you are obligated to obtain those Certificates. - 7. OFFICIAL DOCUMENT ABOUT CHANGING THE NAME IF ANY.
- 8. APOSTILLE STAMPS
This stamp refers the legalization and validity of your documents in international use. (1961 Hague Convention Abolishing the Requirement of Legalization for Foreign Public Documents).
Apostille Stamp is necessary to provide for Birth Certificates and Certificates of no Impediment to marry issued by Municipality where the person is registrated.
All documents must be translated and certified in Greek Embassy/ Consulate in your country.
Please note that all documents must be sent by fax or e-mail for review 4 weeks before your wedding in Santorini. We have to confirm that your paperwork is in order.
After all this, you just need to bring the originals with you. You have to stay in Santorini at least 1 day after your wedding, in order to go to the Town Hall to sign your Marriage Certificate.
It will be sent to you by post from the Town Hall.
Both parties are obliged to provide full Birth Certificate. No shorter versions will be accepted.
